Details
The Ilyushin IL-96 is a Russian long-range wide-body airliner, designed as an improved successor to the IL-86. First flown in 1988 and entering service in 1993, the IL-96 features a redesigned, shorter fuselage compared to the IL-86, distinctive winglets, and four Aviadvigatel PS-90A high-bypass turbofan engines. The IL-96-300 serves as the baseline model with capacity for 235-300 passengers and a range of 8,400 km. Key improvements over the IL-86 include modern glass cockpit with three-person crew, improved fuel efficiency, winglets for better aerodynamics, and PS-90A engines. The family includes the IL-96-300 baseline, the stretched IL-96-400M with upgraded PS-90A1 engines and 370-passenger capacity, and the IL-96-400T cargo freighter. The IL-96 is primarily used for Russian government VIP transport and limited commercial operations. With a service life of 25 years or 70,000 flight hours, the IL-96 family continues in limited production for Russian domestic needs, with the IL-96-400M selected for mass production starting 2025.
