About
The Ilyushin IL-96-400M is a stretched, long-range variant of the IL-96-300, powered by upgraded Russian PS-90A1 engines. Featuring a 9.35-meter fuselage extension compared to the IL-96-300, the IL-96-400M can accommodate up to 370 passengers in single-class configuration. First developed in the 2000s as a successor to the Western-powered IL-96M (which used Pratt & Whitney engines), the IL-96-400M uses entirely Russian components including four PS-90A1 turbofans producing 171 kN thrust each, ensuring operational independence from Western sanctions. With a maximum takeoff weight of 270 tonnes and range of 8,100 km with 40-tonne payload (13,000 km ferry range), the IL-96-400M serves as Russia's primary domestically-produced wide-body airliner. The aircraft entered mass production planning in 2025 as part of Russia's strategy to rebuild domestic aviation capacity. Key improvements over the IL-96-300 include 9.35m longer fuselage (63.94m total), +70-118 passenger capacity increase, upgraded PS-90A1 engines with 8.75% more thrust, and higher payload capacity (58t vs 40t).
