About
The Embraer ERJ-140 is the intermediate member of the ERJ family, seating 44 passengers. Developed to fill the gap between the 37-seat ERJ-135 and 50-seat ERJ-145, the ERJ-140 features a fuselage length between its two siblings. First delivered in 2001, it was specifically designed to comply with scope clause restrictions in U.S. pilot union contracts, which limited the number of seats regional jets could have when operated by major airlines' regional partners. The aircraft shares the same Rolls-Royce AE 3007A engines and performance characteristics as the ERJ-145, but with slightly reduced passenger capacity. The ERJ-140 saw limited production with only 74 aircraft delivered, primarily serving American Airlines regional operations through American Eagle. Despite lower production numbers, it successfully served its niche market purpose.
