About

The Embraer C-390 Millennium is the commercial civil cargo variant of the KC-390 military transport aircraft. While the KC-390 was designed primarily for military operations, the C-390 designation is used for civilian and commercial applications of the same basic airframe. The C-390 retains the same high-performance characteristics as its military counterpart, including jet speed (470 knots cruise), high altitude capability (36,000 ft), and modern fly-by-wire controls with Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics. The aircraft is powered by two IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines, the same proven powerplant family used on commercial airliners such as the Airbus A320 family. This commonality with commercial engines provides operational advantages including worldwide parts availability and maintenance support. The C-390's spacious cargo hold measures 18.5 meters in length with 177.5 cubic meters of cargo volume, capable of accommodating up to 26 tons of freight. The aircraft can carry standard cargo pallets (six regular pallets or seven 463L military pallets), commercial freight containers, or oversized cargo. The civil variant is suitable for commercial freight operations, humanitarian missions, disaster relief, firefighting operations, and specialized cargo transport. The aircraft's ability to operate from shorter and semi-prepared runways expands operational flexibility beyond traditional commercial cargo aircraft. The C-390's high cruise speed allows for faster cargo delivery compared to turboprop freighters, while maintaining reasonable operating economics through use of proven commercial engines. The aircraft represents Embraer's entry into the medium commercial freighter market, competing with converted passenger aircraft and dedicated freighter designs. While most production has focused on the military KC-390 variant, the C-390 offers a commercial alternative for operators requiring high-speed, high-capacity cargo operations with tactical airfield capability.
