The BAC One-Eleven Series 500 is the largest and most successful variant featuring a 4.11-meter (13ft 6in) fuselage stretch to accommodate 99-119 passengers. Introduced in 1967, the Series 500 was developed to compete more effectively with the Douglas DC-9-30 and Boeing 737-200. It featured more powerful Rolls-Royce Spey 512-14DW engines and strengthened structure to handle the increased weight. Despite being significantly longer, it retained good short-field performance and economical operation. The Series 500 became the best-selling One-Eleven variant and was popular with airlines worldwide. It remained in production until 1982 and served well into the 2000s. A total of 86 Series 500 aircraft were built.
