ATR 72-500

The ATR 72-500 is an enhanced variant introduced in 1997, featuring more powerful PW127F engines rated at 2,400 shp and a modern glass cockpit with six-screen EFIS. The -500 offers improved hot-and-high performance, increased payload capacity, and better fuel efficiency compared to earlier variants. Seating 68-74 passengers, the ATR 72-500 became the workhorse of many regional airlines worldwide. The variant introduced full systems commonality with the ATR 42-500, allowing operators to fly both types with reduced training and maintenance costs. The ATR 72-500 proved extremely popular in diverse markets, from European regional routes to island-hopping services in the Pacific and Caribbean. Its combination of reliability, low operating costs (40% lower fuel burn than regional jets), and passenger comfort made it a preferred choice for airlines seeking efficient regional capacity. The -500 served as the immediate predecessor to the current ATR 72-600.
