About
The Tupolev Tu-134B is the final and most advanced production variant of the Tu-134 family, introduced in 1980 with enhanced capacity and modernized systems. Building upon the successful Tu-134A design with the same 37.05-meter fuselage length, the Tu-134B features an optimized cabin layout accommodating 80 passengers in standard configuration or up to 96 in high-density "tourist" configuration - representing the highest passenger capacity of any Tu-134 variant. The Tu-134B is powered by upgraded Soloviev D-30 Series III engines producing 68 kN (6,930 kgf) thrust each - the most powerful engines fitted to the Tu-134 family - providing improved performance, better fuel efficiency, and enhanced hot-and-high operations capability. Major improvements include advanced avionics and navigation systems meeting evolving international standards, modernized flight deck with improved instrumentation and systems integration, enhanced passenger cabin with updated interiors and amenities, improved auxiliary power unit (APU) for ground operations, strengthened airframe and systems for extended service life, and retained conventional radar nose (no glazed nose section). The Tu-134B maintained the proven rear-mounted twin-engine configuration and T-tail design that characterized the family, while incorporating lessons learned from years of Tu-134A operations. With production beginning in 1980 and continuing until 1989, the Tu-134B represented the culmination of nearly two decades of Tu-134 development. The variant served primarily with Aeroflot and select Eastern European operators, providing economical high-capacity service on short-to-medium range routes connecting secondary cities with major hubs throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc.
