About

The Tupolev Tu-134 Original is the initial production variant of the Tu-134 family, first flown on July 29, 1963, representing a significant advancement in Soviet short-haul jet aviation. Developed from the Tu-124 as a more efficient and modern design, the original Tu-134 features a distinctive glazed nose section housing the navigator's station, providing excellent forward visibility for approach and landing - a characteristic Soviet design feature carried over from bomber heritage. Powered by two Soloviev D-30 turbofan engines (66.7 kN thrust each) mounted on the rear fuselage in a distinctive configuration, the aircraft features a T-tail design with the horizontal stabilizer mounted atop the vertical fin, swept wings with anhedral (negative dihedral) for stability, and robust landing gear designed for operations from unpaved or poorly maintained runways common in the Soviet Union. The original variant has a fuselage length of 34.3 meters and accommodates 72 passengers in typical configuration (or up to 80 in high-density layout), with a range of 1,890 km enabling service on domestic routes connecting Soviet cities. The glazed nose, while providing excellent visibility, added weight and complexity compared to conventional radar installations. Entering Aeroflot service in September 1967, the original Tu-134 served as the backbone of Soviet domestic aviation on short-haul routes until supplemented by the stretched Tu-134A variant. The aircraft proved reliable and economical for its era, capable of operating from austere airfields throughout the Soviet Union.
