McDonnell Douglas MD-90
Douglas/McDonnell Douglas

About
The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 represents a major modernization of the MD-80 design, featuring new-generation IAE V2500 turbofan engines for dramatically improved fuel efficiency and noise reduction. Introduced in 1994, it retained the 45.06-meter fuselage seating 153-172 passengers but replaced the venerable JT8D engines with V2500-D5 turbofans producing 111 kN (25,000 lbf) thrust each. The modern high-bypass engines reduced fuel consumption by 25%, cut noise levels significantly, and extended range to 4,074 km (2,200 NM). The MD-90 also featured an advanced EFIS glass cockpit, improved wing design, and enhanced flight controls. Delta Air Lines became the launch customer and largest operator with 16 aircraft. However, the MD-90 faced fierce competition from the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320 family, which offered similar performance with greater market acceptance. Boeing's 1997 acquisition of McDonnell Douglas further limited MD-90 marketing. Only 116 MD-90s were built before production ended in 2000. China's airlines operated the majority (over 50 examples), where they continued reliable service through the 2010s. The MD-90 proved the DC-9 design's enduring potential but arrived too late to challenge established competitors.
