About

The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 represents the longest-range MD-80 variant, optimized for transcontinental and extended overwater operations. Introduced in 1985, it retained the standard 45.06-meter fuselage seating 155-172 passengers but featured the most powerful JT8D-219 engines producing 93.4 kN (21,000 lbf) thrust each and maximum fuel capacity. These enhancements extended range to 4,635 km (2,504 NM)—sufficient for coast-to-coast US flights with full passenger loads and reserve fuel. The MD-83 also featured increased maximum takeoff weight (72,575 kg) to accommodate the additional fuel. Alaska Airlines became a major operator, using the MD-83 for transcontinental and Hawaiian routes. American Airlines, SAS, and Spanair also operated significant fleets. The variant's extended range opened new route possibilities for medium-capacity operations, competing effectively against larger widebody aircraft on thinner long-haul markets. The MD-83's reliability and fuel efficiency made it economically viable even as fuel prices rose. A total of 265 MD-83s were built. Many remain in service with cargo operators, benefiting from the powerful engines and robust airframe.
