McDonnell Douglas MD-82
Douglas/McDonnell Douglas

About
The McDonnell Douglas MD-82 became the most successful MD-80 series variant, featuring more powerful engines and increased fuel capacity for extended range operations. Introduced in 1981, it retained the 45.06-meter fuselage seating 155-172 passengers but upgraded to Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217A/C turbofans producing 89 kN (20,000 lbf) thrust each. The enhanced thrust and additional fuel tanks extended range to 3,798 km (2,052 NM), enabling coast-to-coast US operations and intra-European services with full passenger loads. American Airlines became the largest operator with over 360 examples, using the MD-82 as the backbone of its domestic network. Delta Air Lines, Alitalia, China Eastern, and Aeromexico also operated large fleets. The MD-82's reliability (dispatch reliability over 99%), economics, and range flexibility made it ideal for both high-frequency short routes and longer transcons. The variant dominated US domestic aviation throughout the 1980s-2000s. A total of 569 MD-82s were built, representing nearly half of all MD-80 production. Many continued flying through the 2010s, testament to the design's durability.
