About
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a modernized, stretched, and re-engined development of the DC-10 tri-jet wide-body, featuring advanced technology and improved performance. Introduced in 1990, the MD-11 stretched the DC-10 fuselage by 5.7 meters to 61.2 meters, added distinctive winglets for improved fuel efficiency, incorporated a modern two-crew glass cockpit with EFIS displays eliminating the flight engineer, and featured more powerful and efficient engines (GE CF6-80C2 or PW4000 series producing 274 kN each). Additional fuel tanks increased capacity to 146,165 liters (38,615 USG), extending range to 13,150 km (7,100 NM). The MD-11 could seat 298 passengers in three-class configuration or up to 410 in high-density layouts. Despite these improvements, the MD-11 faced fierce competition from more fuel-efficient twin-engine wide-bodies like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330. Airlines found the tri-jet configuration less economical in an era of ETOPS-certified twins. Production ended in 2001 after 200 aircraft were delivered. However, the MD-11 found tremendous success as a freighter, with FedEx and UPS operating large fleets. The MD-11F remains highly valued in cargo operations for its large payload capacity (up to 95 tons), proven reliability, and excellent hot-and-high performance.
