Lockheed L-188 Electra
Lockheed

About
The only large turboprop airliner built in the United States. Two broke up in flight in 1959 and 1960 from a whirl-mode flutter nobody had predicted; Lockheed fixed it, but the reputation did not recover, and the airframe went on to a long second life as the P-3 Orion. No type certificate for it is reachable — the FAA's regulatory system is closed to us and EASA never held the type — so this entry carries its history but none of the certified weights the rest of the library is built on. The cruise speed, cruise Mach, range, ceiling, climb rate, wingspan, length, height, maximum take-off weight and take-off distance are EUROCONTROL's figures for the L188 type code rather than a certificate's: a type certificate states limits and weights, not cruise performance, and the source does not distinguish sub-variants.
