Ilyushin IL-86
Ilyushin Aviation Complex

About
The Ilyushin IL-86 was the Soviet Union's first wide-body airliner and the first Soviet aircraft with underwing-mounted engines. Developed by the Ilyushin Design Bureau, it entered service with Aeroflot on December 26, 1980. The IL-86 represented a significant milestone in Soviet aviation, featuring a distinctive three-class cabin layout and a unique passenger boarding system with built-in airstairs. Despite its innovative design, the aircraft suffered from inefficiency compared to Western counterparts due to its heavy weight and dated engines. Production ran from 1976 to 1994, with 107 aircraft built. The type was primarily operated by Aeroflot and other Soviet successor airlines, with all civilian examples retired by 2011. The IL-86 served as the basis for the more advanced IL-96.
