About
The Ilyushin IL-62MK is a medium-range, high-capacity variant of the IL-62 family, introduced in 1978. The IL-62MK features a strengthened airframe structure, reinforced wings, and beefed-up landing gear to accommodate a higher maximum takeoff weight of 167,000 kg (increased from 165,500 kg on the IL-62M). This structural enhancement enables the IL-62MK to carry more passengers - up to 195-198 in high-density configuration compared to 174 on the IL-62M - making it suitable for medium-range routes with high passenger demand. Powered by the same four Soloviev D-30KU turbofan engines as the IL-62M (107.9 kN thrust each), the IL-62MK sacrifices some range capability for increased payload capacity. The variant features improved passenger amenities including overhead baggage compartments, wider aisles, and more comfortable seating arrangements. With seating configured six-abreast at 84cm (33in) seat pitch in economy class, the IL-62MK could accommodate up to 198 passengers in single-class layout. The IL-62MK served primarily on high-density medium-range routes within the Soviet Union and to neighboring countries, complementing the longer-range IL-62M variant.
