About
The Ilyushin IL-62M is the improved production variant of the IL-62 family, first appearing at the 1971 Paris Airshow and entering service in 1973-1974. The IL-62M features more powerful, efficient, and quieter Soloviev D-30KU turbofan engines (107.9 kN thrust each) replacing the NK-8-4 engines of the original IL-62, providing better fuel economy and reduced noise. Key improvements include an additional fuel tank in the tail fin increasing fuel capacity by 5,300 liters (to 105,300L total), simpler and lighter single-slotted flaps replacing the original's complex flap system, incremental aerodynamic improvements, and modified mechanized cargo holds capable of housing containers. With a maximum takeoff weight increased to 165,500 kg, operating empty weight of 71,500 kg, and capacity for 168-174 passengers in typical configuration, the IL-62M offered enhanced range and payload performance. The IL-62M became the standard production version and was widely exported, serving with airlines across the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and beyond. Production continued until 1994, with the IL-62M representing the most numerous variant of the IL-62 family.
