Convair 990 Coronado
Convair

About
The Convair 990 Coronado is a stretched and faster variant of the Convair 880, developed as an ultra-high-speed commercial jet transport. First flown in January 1961 and entering service in 1962, the 990 was designed to be even faster than the 880, featuring distinctive "speed pods" on the wings that reduced drag and increased fuel capacity. The aircraft could cruise at 540 knots and carried up to 149 passengers. Powered by four General Electric CJ805-23B turbofan engines, the 990 represented cutting-edge aerodynamic design with its anti-shock bodies on the trailing edge of the wings. Despite being one of the fastest subsonic airliners ever built, the Coronado suffered from similar commercial challenges as the 880, with high operating costs and competition from more economical jets. Only 37 aircraft were produced before production ended in 1963, serving airlines including American Airlines, Swissair, and Spantax. The 990 holds a unique place in aviation history as one of the fastest commercial jets of the classic era.
