About

The largest aeroplane ever built, made in one example to carry the Buran space shuttle on its back and later the only aircraft in the world able to take certain outsize loads. It was destroyed at Hostomel in 2022. The cruise speed, cruise Mach, range, climb rate, wingspan, length, height and take-off distance are EUROCONTROL's figures for the A225 type code rather than a certificate's: a type certificate states limits and weights, not cruise performance, and the source does not distinguish sub-variants. The weights, Mach limit, ceiling, fuel and engine rating are certificated figures from the Aviation Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee's An-225 data sheet: maximum ramp 650 t, take-off 640 t, landing 550 t, payload in the fuselage 250 t, VMO 570 km/h indicated at M 0.77, maximum altitude 11,600 m, and six Progress D-18T rated at 23,430 kgf (229.8 kN) for take-off. The fuel volume is the certificated 360 t at the density the sheet states beside it, 0.775 g/cm³.
